Humorous Aside
Let's be clear about one thing. Our culture is not divided. It is deeply united. It is just united into Balkanized little subcultures.
We have the Culture of belief which breaks into Left and Right. The Right has faith in a framework of Truth. The Left finds that arrogant and unenlightened. The Religious Left founds itself on interior feelings of "goodness" based on sometimes a poorly formed conscious. The RL has followed their own light to a myriad of social stands that would attempt to, as Barak Obama said, build the Kingdom of "heaven on earth".
The Religious Right founds itself on the Word of God and Faith in absolute truth. The RL is founded on a individual hearts interpretting the shifting nuances of daily life.
There is also the subcultures of non-belief which have almost made a "god" of Nature. The humanity-loathing-radical environmentalists are one such group. Militant Atheists and angry agnostics that focus on destroying the "fairy tale of belief" are another.
What is kind of funny is the cries for unity that ring out during election cycles. Candidates claim that they are the ones who can restore unity to a divided nation. Fat chance! The only thing that could possibly unite such a Balkanized group of hundreds of millions....is a common enemy that wakes up everyone to a sober vision of reality.....the way 9/11 did until....perhaps 9/15.
